چکیده

RESUME A 4D-VAR chemical data assimilation system, BASCOE, is used to assimilate the chemical observations taken by the three dedicated instruments onboard Envisat. For the first time data assimilation takes active part in the validation of chemical atmospheric observations. Here we present the results of the assimilation of MIPAS NLE products and NRT products. It is shown that the MIPAS constrained analyses are representative of the MIPAS observed state. The comparison with HALOE show that MIPAS O3, H2O, CH4, NOx are in very good agreement with HALOE and these results are inline with the current understanding of both instruments.

4D-Var Assimilation of MIPAS chemical observations: ozone and nitrogen dioxide analyses

This paper discusses the global analyses of stratospheric ozone (O 3) and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2) obtained by the Belgian Assimilation System for Chemical Observations from Envisat (BASCOE). Based on a chemistry transport model (CTM) and the 4-dimensional variational (4D-Var) method, BASCOE has assimilated chemical obser-Our analyses are evaluated against assimilated MIPAS data and independent ...

A New 4-dimensional Variational Assimilation System Applied to Envisat Mipas Observations

A four-dimensional variational (4D-var) data assimilation system intended for operational application to stratospheric trace gas observations is being developed. The Kernel of this new system is a novel stratospheric global chemistry circulation model (GCCM) and its adjoint version. The German Weather Service’s global forecast model (GME) with its icosahedral discretisation scheme serves as an ...

Comparisons between ground-based FTIR and MIPAS N2O and HNO3 profiles before and after assimilation in BASCOE

Within the framework of the Network for Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC), regular ground-based Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) measurements of many species are performed at several locations. Inversion schemes provide vertical profile information and characterization of the retrieved products which are therefore relevant for contributing to the validation of MIPAS profiles ...

An Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis and 4D-Var Data Assimilation Study of Texas Air Quality

In this paper we discuss the theory of adjoint sensitivity analysis and the method of 4D-Var data assimilation in the context of the Sulfur Transport Eulerian Model (STEM). The STEM atmospheric Chemical Transport Model (CTM) is used to perform adjoint sensitivity analysis and data assimilation over the State of Texas. We first demonstrate the use of adjoint sensitivity analysis for a receptor l...

Tropical methane emissions: A revised view from SCIAMACHY onboard ENVISAT

[1] Methane retrievals from near-infrared spectra recorded by the SCIAMACHY instrument onboard ENVISAT hitherto suggested unexpectedly large tropical emissions. Even though recent studies confirm substantial tropical emissions, there were indications for an unresolved error in the satellite retrievals. Here we identify a retrieval error related to inaccuracies in water vapor spectroscopic param...
